The Korean Cultural Centre UK (www.kccuk.org.uk) and the British Council Korea (www.britishcouncil.or.kr) have teamed up to co-organize a group exhibition of contemporary Korean artists based in London.
“The Sound of the Muse: 6 Artists from London,” featuring the latest artistic productions of emerging Korean artists. is coming to the lounge grounds of Seoul’s Artsonje Center, following its successful London show held last winter from December 16 to January 21, 2012 under the name “Muse London.”
Among the artists in the lineup are Korea-born artists currently active in the London art scene including Kiwoun Shin, Seokyeong Kang, Wonwoo Lee, Eemyun Kang, EE, and Sean Roh.
Each participating artist explores how they perceive London -- one of world’s cultural hubs, a conglomerate of diverse cultures and ethnicities -- in relation to their inner world, stemming from personal experience and memories of the city. The city is also home to Young British Artists (YBA), which includes some of the great names in contemporary art like Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn
The assemblage of personal reports on how different artists make a relationship with this lively cosmopolitan city is depicted in the form of interviews, documentary snippets, fantasy, and studied reflections as seen through the lens of foreign eyes.
For the London edition, curator Jeremy Akerman intentionally removed headphones, which can easily be found in media installations, letting the sound of each video reinterpretation occupy the hall making an uncanny harmony.
Although, such a “dissonant” setting has not been prepared for the audiences in Seoul, the exhibit masterfully captures different cultural perspectives in the midst of people strolling through bookshelf aisles and the rest area of the Lounge space, creating a new atmosphere and visual stimulation.
The exhibition runs through April 15 in the first floor lounge space of Artsonje Center in Sogyeok-dong. For directions, click here: http://artsonje.org/eng.
